Graveyard shift, 1800-0300. This is the shift I wanted when I received the dreaded 0900-1800 shift, but I’m not excited about the way I got it. Someone got fired and they needed someone to fill it, so I was chosen.

I didn’t bitch about my previous schedule, knowing it was going to change in three months, but the previous graveyard guy did. He bitched about everything, and that’s probably what got him the boot.

Remember folks, attitude is everything.

Why is 9am to 6pm a bad shift?

When you’re a dispatcher in public transportation those hours straddle the two peak times of the day. It gets crazy around 0800 and finally lets up around 1700. Other shifts really only deal with one of the peaks, but 0900-1800 gets a double whammy. Good riddance to those hours.

I also prefer odd shifts. Need to go to the bank, doctor or get your car worked on? Not if you’re 0900-1800 M-F. That’s why I didn’t mind working weekends. Those days are a little calmer as well.

Not much of a graveyard shift. That would be the midnight to 9am shift.

I work 7p - 7a with a weird alternating days thing and absolutely agree with you on being able to get things done when you work the odd shifts.

Not your traditional graveyard, but the closest thing we have to one. 0400 is when things start hopping again for us, mostly dialysis patients and fast-food workers.

I worked a rotating shift for 11 years. 5 shifts that covered the entire work week, 24/7. We spent 4 weeks on a shift, then moved on to the next one in order... 1st, 2nd & 3rd M-F, then weekend nights and weekend days. The weekend nights shift was a split shift as well. The M-F graveyard was my least favorite, but at least it was only 4 weeks, then on to the weekend night shift. But, one thing I do miss is having some time off through the week to get things - anything - done. That was nice. But, not having to work graveyard ever again? That is even better!

Seriously, anyone who has to do shift work has my respect and sympathy.

during my last job whereby i was pushing carts for Megacorporation #9e9, i generally ended up getting the 15:30 to 00:30 shift, with an hour lunch about 19:30. the problem was, since i was the last one there, i got to clean up the wreck that my co-workers left behind.

after i ended up being kept over until 02:00 in the bitter cold, i had enough, and set my latest available times to 23:00 so i could actually go home and not feel like i just got murdered.

This. I used to work 6pm-midnight Monday through Saturday. Favorite schedule I’ve ever had. Still time to go out at night if desired, I could always get plenty of sleep, and I had most of the day to take care of absolutely anything, without dealing with the 5-7pm rush hour. I miss that shift
